Recent winter survival news. Some have happy endings, some don’t.

RESCUE UPDATE: Snowboarder found alive after four days lost on Mount Seymour.
“I hate to say this but I think (Martin’s) chances of survival are very minimal,” Jones said early Wednesday. “With weather conditions and exposure to the elements unless he was able to dig a snow cave (he could not survive) … our information is he is very inexperienced.”

As an outdoor winter enthusiast myself its important to always consider and be aware of current conditions and how they could effect your safety in the back country.
Speak with the ski patrol, Rangers, and folks who know the area. They are there to help and have valuable information regarding the area you are recreating in.

“They looked exhausted, dehydrated and hungry, but they were in good spirits,” McCutcheon said. “They did the right things to survive.”

Always check the weather! With recent heavy snows all across the mountain west the last couple of weeks, avalanche conditions are critical.

“It’s wonderful to live another day, to live another year. It’s wonderful to make it out alive,” he told CTV News from his hospital bed.

A tip for winter sports: Know your boundaries
“I wasn’t dizzy or freaking out,” he said, but he knew he was in trouble. “Different thoughts go through your mind. I was unsure if I was going to make it home, but at the same time I was telling myself I was going to make it out.”

Even a warm sunny day on the slopes can lead to a miserable experience spent outside on a freezing cold night.
Stay within the boundaries of your ski area. This happens every year, and if all your wearing is a pair of jeans and a light wind breaker for a top, you’re in for some real trouble.

Quickly warming days in spring can be disarming as well. This type of weather has a propensity to create avalanches, and rockfall on steeper slopes.

Education and awareness are the keys to enjoying the back country in winter. You can never study enough, learn the skills and practice them before you head out on that exciting snow adventure.

Whatever type of recreation you enjoy in the winter, have fun, but be prepared.
