Winter Survival Skills Camp

Lifesong Adventures winter survival skills camp addresses the most important fundamentals of wilderness survival snow camping.

Winter survival camp requires more effort for creature comforts.  Here at winter camp you learn axe craft, primitive winter shelter application, one – match, flint and steel, friction fire making,  (a challenge when dry wood is scarce), and open pit fire cooking.

  • Building a Winter Survival Shelter
  • Shelter and Fire Combination’s
  • Survival Shelters in Snow Country

During Winter Camp, when the weather is unfavorable for outdoor activities; we hunker down under cover; feed the stove, and work on our carving skills. Knife safety and proper use are one of the first items we cover at camp. You will learn about primitive clothing and foot wear, like moccasins and a Capote. We’ll craft string from native plants and my personal favorite ~ storytelling.

  • One – Match Fire
  • Flint and Steel
  • Friction Fire Making

When the sun shines we head outside to discover the many animal tracks for us to follow. Snow is a great medium for observing animal movement. See if you can determine whether the rabbit escaped the fox. Everyone is interested in wildlife behavior and with some of the largest predators slumbering away, the smaller ones come out to play.

  • Knife and Axe Craft
  • Snare & Deadfall Traps
  • Animal Tracking

It is usually when we are distracted that we lose our way and during the winter when sunlight is shortened it is easy to lose track of time wondering where and how you lost that last set of tracks. We’ll put your awareness skills to work and teach you primitive orienteering.

  • Winter Nutrition
  • Plants and Uses
  • Winter Edibles

Water is always important, especially so in winter when we are less likely to feel thirsty. We’ll talk about hydration in winter and you’ll learn about melting snow for water and other water issues like purification. Oops, is the water filter frozen?

  • Basket Weaving
  • String Making

Those winter wild edibles are usually moving, so prepare to learn where and how to set snares and make traps. Sometimes those freeze too, so be ready to learn how to throw and cast primitive hunting tools.

We will definitely have the sweat lodge ready with lots of firewood for this camp.
