What is an Atlatl?

The atlatl and dart consist of a launching device and a projectile.   Pronounced  Ăt -lăt - l, it is and Aztec word for spear thrower.  Atlatl's were the precursor to bows and arrows.

Making an Atlatl From a Branch

by Dino Labiste

PrimitiveWays

"A completed atlatl made from an oak branch.  The handle may be

wrapped to provide a better grip.  The handle of the oak atlatl was

wrapped with split pine root. You may also use buckskin or willow

bark for the handle wrapping. Experiment with different materials.

Another alternative for the handle, besides wrapping, would be to

shave or cut the top side of the handle flat. Leave the bottom side

in its natural rounded shape.  The flat surface will provide a better

gripping surface than a rounded surface."

What is a Throwing Stick?

"As a survival tool, the throwing stick is one of the most effective and easiest tools to obtain. Other than a weapon, it can also be used as a digging tool for making fire-pits and underground shelter. A curved limb will suffice as a throwing stick. Ancient throwing sticks were believed to be made of hardwood with a weighted or curved on one side to impart momentum so the stick stays straight and does not wobble in mid-flight."  Wikipedia
