What is a Deadfall Trap?

The figure 4 deadfall is a trigger used to drop weight onto a prey and crush it. The type of weight used may vary, but it should be heavy enough to kill or incapacitate the prey immediately.

A horizontal bait bar is balanced at right angles to an upright with a locking bar, which supports a heavy weight pivoting around the tip of the upright.  A rock is being used for weight in the photo above.  The trap will be stable, but have a hair trigger causing the trap to collapse from the slightest touch.

What is a Snare?

There are many options for snares.  Lifesong Adventures uses a simple snare construction consisting of a noose placed over an animal trail or den hole and attached to a firmly planted stake.
