What is a Deadfall Trap?
The figure 4
deadfall is a trigger used to drop weight onto a prey and crush
it. The
type of weight used may vary, but it should be heavy enough to kill
or incapacitate the prey immediately.
Illustration from U.S. News and World Report.
A horizontal bait bar is balanced at right angles to an upright with a locking bar, which supports a heavy weight pivoting around the tip of the upright. A rock is being used for weight in the photo above. The trap will be stable, but have a hair trigger causing the trap to collapse from the slightest touch.
What is a Snare? There are many options for snares. Lifesong Adventures uses a simple snare construction consisting of a noose placed over an animal trail or den hole and attached to a firmly planted stake.
