WHAT IS THE EDGE?
THE EDGE is a Lifesong Adventure Camp based on the hit survival series Man vs. Wild, starring Bear Grylls.
As consultants for the popular Discovery Channel show, we have been inundated with interest from many viewers round the world. Now is YOUR chance to experience the excitement and challenge Bear Grylls faces in this rigorous, demanding, empowering camp.
THE EDGE is for YOU. In a few short days of intense training you will.....
create fire ► shelter ► build confidence
.....carrying only a knife, flint, canteen/cup and the clothes on your back.
At our beautiful and rugged mountain camp in northern California, participants learn to safely create fire by using flint and tinder.
Build shelter using only what nature provides, locate, gather, and purify water and explore wild plants, insects, and other edible bounty from nature. This is the tradition of the sacred four skills of wilderness survival.
Each participant will study the ancient skills of tracking and awareness and learn how to apply them in all aspects of The Edge.
You will learn to move safely and confidently over the landscape, blending with the rhythms and cycles of nature.
After successfully completing these skills, we send you out from camp to experience two days and one night on your own. The three days of training prior to your overnight adventure will be fun, never boring, and powerful. Your own confidence and tenacity will carry you through this very personal challenge.
"We too must jump off branches when our soul knows we are ready for the air." Eric Alan
Our own survival skills, knowledge and years of experience will be there to help support, guide and strengthen you.....YOU can do it!
(Though you will be on your own and away from our main camp for your overnight adventure, all participants will be monitored at all times to insure a great experience.)
If you enjoy, "in your face", adventures.....you will want to join us for this one.

It has been exceedingly difficult to choose among all the essays submitted. Each participant expressed memories from childhood and shared the joys and bruises life's challenges have wrought. All of your heartfelt words touched us deeply and we thank you for participating.
CONGRATULATIONS!

Nature will heal my wounds." Aaron T. - Oregon Second Place Winner
Excerpt: "And , through all the hard times there was always one constant in my life...This was the outdoors. I could always turn to the woods... The wilderness has shown me what it is to live, what life is truly about. From nature I have learned that life is one giant opportunity. Whenever an opportunity comes along, one must grab it - it is the lesson of survival. Nature has also taught me to respect it, to let it take its course and to never take it for granted. The wilderness is something I love, protect, and yearn to be with. The Edge would only further my appreciation and love for all the aspects of the outdoor world. And one day, the lessons I learn from The Edge and from nature I hope to pass down to my children."
I told you it was tough to choose and so we have a tie for third place.
Sheri W. - Texas Third Place Winner Tied
Excerpt: "The story of me and nature goes back to around age 6. As a young girl I was quite the little "tomboy". By climbing trees, making intricate forts, and refusing to look like anything that resembled a girl, I earned the family nickname 'Forever Camper'.... And although I still have a sense of adventure and yearning for exploration, the 'Forever Camper' in me has fallen dormant.... I have the skills to help save someone else's life, but if I ever needed to save my own I might not have what it takes..... I believe that the "Edge" experience will enhance my life by reuniting me with nature, teaching me how to properly utilize it, and last but not least, how to survive it if ever needed. I am eager to reunite with the outdoors, discover ways to help myself, and in the end hope to awaken the 'Forever Camper' inside of me."
Mathew B. - Oregon Third Place Winner Tied
Excerpt: "My love and respect for the outdoors and wilderness survival comes from two places: my experiences as a Boy Scout and my grandfather.... On one trip up to Alaska to visit my grandparents,....(sic, we were)walking the beaches at low tide in the afternoon. As we walked, he was telling me some survival stories, which led to him telling me about different things that were safe to eat in survival situations. We stopped near some rocks that were exposed by the low tide, and he used his knife (which he was never without) to pry a limpet off a rock. As he used his knife to scrape the limpet out of its shell, he explained to me that these could safely be eaten raw in a survival situation and proceeded to pop the limpet out of the shell and into his mouth to demonstrate. I was only about six years old....but I didn't want to disappoint him, so I quickly agreed to try one....I closed my eyes, tossed it in my mouth, chewed it once or twice. One year ago my life changed dramatically when my son came into this world.... Unfortunately my grandfather....never got to meet his great grandson, but I hope to pass along to my son the stories and skills that I was given by his great grandfather.... On top of that, I would love to be able to tell him some of my own survival stories from the time his dad went to the Edge Camp."
