Survival Courses – Oregon

Welcome to Oregon survival courses, with Mark Wienert, consultant to Man Vs Wild.

Mark is offering one day, weekend, and weekday survival courses in basic and advanced outdoor survival training at our Oregon location, autumn and winter seasons of 2012 and 2013.

Note from Mark:   February 2012 marks the end of Oregon survival courses for the winter season. Oregon courses will resume again in November 2012.  Please see Lifesong Adventures’  Weekend Survival School for survival courses beginning April 2012 in northern California.  Spring field camp in California is only an hour and half south of  Medford, OR.

Each course is limited to a maximum of ten participants. Please register as soon as possible to reserve your spot. Contact Mark for course availability.

Fire Craft – Standard Curriculum    Dates:  November 08-09, 10-11, 2012
Emphasis is on building a strong foundation in basic fire construction including one-match and flint and steel technique. Participants learn and practice with hands on instruction for successful fire making in extreme conditions. Meets all SAR emergency test criteria and then some.

Fire Craft – Advanced  Curriculum     Dates:  Dec 29-30, 2012
Prerequisite:  Fire Making – Standard
Emphasis is on wood type, tinder, construction, and proper technique to be successful with a ‘Bow Drill ’ friction fire.

Hand Drill Fire Making

Making your first fire by rubbing sticks together is a very empowering and unforgettable experience.  A ‘Rites of Passage’in many ways.  Because the bow drill fire is not a simple skill to learn, you must first develop a strong foundation in basic fire making by attending and completing the standard fire making course.

 

 

Standard Emergency Shelter – Curriculum     Dates:   November 15, 2012
Emphasis is on modern shelter set up, including application of natural insulation, tarps, emergency foil blankets, and tents with lecture and field application. Meets all SAR emergency test criteria and then some.

Advanced Emergency Shelter – Curriculum    Dates:  November 16, 2012
Prerequisite:  Standard Emergency Shelter
Emphasis is on proper construction and use of a warming fire and primitive shelter combination.

Introduction to Animal Tracking – Curriculum    Date:  November 29-30 & December 01-02, 2012
Emphasis is on building a strong foundation in the ‘art of seeing’ and how it relates to tracking wildlife with lecture and field study.

Introduction to SAR (Search and Rescue) Man-Tracking – Curriculum    Date:  December 06-07, & December 15-16, 2012
Recomendation: Introduction to Animal Tracking for strong foundation in the art of seeing. 
Emphasis is on fundamental search and rescue man-tracking with lecture and field study. Meets all SAR emergency test criteria and then some.

Introduction to Traps and Snares – Curriculum    Date:  January 19-20, 2013
Emphasis on construction and application of primitive dead-fall and snare traps for use in survival.

Edible and Useful Mushrooms – Curriculum Date:  November 17-18, 2012

The delicious Chanterelles

Emphasis is on recognizing common edible, look-a-like, and toxic mushroom species including field study which requires hiking on uneven terrain.

Coastal Edible Plants – Two Days Curriculum    Date: November 03-04,2012
Emphasis is on edible and useful plants on the Oregon Coast with lecture and field study.  Recommend attending Useful and Edible Mushrooms for a well rounded education in wild edibles.

Quick Basket Weaving – Curriculum    Date:  January 05-06, 2013
Emphasis is on harvesting native materials to construct a simple Berry basket, string and cordage materials.  Recommend attending Coastal Useful Plants for identification of numerous basket materials.

Eligible Students: Adults and teens 12-17 (teens 12-15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.)   No minimum enrollment – maximum 10.

Registration:  Please register for the courses of your choice as soon as possible.  This helps us with course preparation.  All students are required to sign a camp policy, medical, and liability release form to participate .  Students under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian’s signature on all forms.

Duration:  Varies, see course descriptions.

Schedule:  Survival courses begin at 8:30 am and end at 5:00 pm (PST).

Location:  Oregon Coast, four hours south of Portland; an hour and a half drive southwest of Eugene; a half hour north of Coos Bay; and, a half hour south of Florence.   Upon completed registration directions to course location will be made available.

  • Accommodations:  recommendations for accommodations William M. Tugman State Park and  Umpqua Lighthouse State Park for camping, search Reedsport, OR for local motel accommodations
  • Meals:  none provided
  • Leave No Trace:  pack it in and pack it out
  • Equipment:  appropriate rain gear, warm clothes, rain/hiking boots, extra socks, gloves, day pack, snack, lunch, personal carving knife (pocket knives are okay)
  • Transport:  shuttle service is unavailable.
