Getting Back to Nature in Texas

Getting back to nature in Texas

Having grown up in a family of hunters and being in the wilderness and roughing it, is old hat to me. I have always enjoyed being outside and enjoying what nature has to offer. Recently my life has had a few down turns and I felt that getting back to nature in Texas would do me some good.

Getting Back to Nature in Texas

I started an online search for an outdoor survival camp and came across wilderness survival training in Texas with Lifesong Wilderness Adventure. And knew this is what I needed to recharge my batteries, so I signed up for the week-long camp.

Gear List

I got the supply list and hit the local REI for all the supplies I did not already have in my camping gear. I contacted Mark with a few more questions I had, and he was very warm and welcoming. He has a very relaxed vibe about him, and this only made my anticipation grow.

LOST - Texas training

Upon arrival at camp, and meeting Mark, (head instructor), Bethany (the herbalist), Walt (the SERE trainer), and the other survivalist, I knew this was going to be exactly what I signed up for and could not wait to get started on the adventure.

Each day started out with the group gathering at the pavilion drinking coffee, chatting, and getting to know one another. It was very low-key, and the schedule was very relaxed.

We started the day once everyone was up and ready to begin, usually around 8:30 am. The days were full of highly informative lectures, and survival training around camp and in the piney forest all around us.

My favorite survival skills

My favorite parts were making my bow drill, tracking the different wildlife, and the seine net making. The last night of camp was a total surprise and a very moving experience for all of us. But I will keep that a surprise for all you future camp attendees.

"What I took away from this experience is a bit difficult to put into words, but it was like nothing I have experienced before and will carry with me throughout the rest of my life."

Getting back to nature in Texas

Nature has a way of humbling a person, in a good way. And I was in awe of this experience and the knowledge I learned. I hope to go back next year as a volunteer to experience this uplifting program again. And soak up more knowledge. Knowledge that helps me deal with the hard knocks of life. Being one with nature truly puts a new perspective on things.

Thank you, for the experience of a lifetime!

Your friend, In Wilderness,

Chris.
